Gun targets have been a part of the community in Gainesville, Texas since the early 1800s. The first target was erected in 1859 by A.C. White and Sons, who were then located on Main Street. The first gun range in Gainesville opened in 1907 and was run by J.E. Mastin and his son-in-law, H.H. Johnson Sr.. The guns used at that time were oldRepeating Rifle Guns from the 1830s which could only be fired one round at a time due to their small size and weight. In 1925, Althea & Wm Kimball bought the business from J.E Mastin and continued to operate it until 1978 when it passed into private ownership again (it is now operated as a museum). In 1977, Mrs Kimball donated all of her collection of firearms to the University of Texas at Austin Library where they are currently on display (along with some other Miscellaneous Firearms Collection items). Today, Gun Targets presents an annual event called “Gainesville” which attracts visitors from around the area to shoot at various targets throughout downtown Gainesville!

Gainesville, Texas was the location of one of the largest gunfights in American history. On November 16, 1881, a small group of men, led by William H. Seward, fought a larger force of unarmed Texans at the Battle of Gainesville. The fight lasted only minutes and resulted in the death of Seward and three other men. It is still considered one of the deadliest engagements in American history.

In 1907, it became an agricultural center due to its location near the Comanche and Kiowa Indian Reservations. Gainesville, Texas was founded in 1837 by George Gaines and his brother, John. The town was named for General James K. Polk, then the U.S. Ambassador to Spain. In 1876, Gainesville became the seat of County government and adopted a new name: Dallas County seat. The county's first courthouse was built in 1889 and its present structure was erected in 1951. The county has grown rapidly since it became a part of the United States in 1928, with a population of over 100,000 as of 2010. The early settlers of Gainesville were primarily farmers who arrived from Georgia and Tennessee. They developed a cotton plantation economy that produced goods such as clothing, groceries, lumber and foodstuff for local consumption as well as export markets such as Mexico City and Havana. By 1840, some men had already moved away from Gainesville to start businesses or become politically active in Dallas County communities elsewhere in the Southwestern United States during what is known as the Texas Revolution (1835-1846). These first generation Texans brought with them their values of individualism (based on self-reliance), flexibility (in response to changing economic conditions), pragmatism (a refusal to take risks) and enterprise (the belief that opportunity would be available if one prepared for it). Some residents of Gainesville did not join the uprising against Spanish rule but took up arms instead under Confederate Major General John Crainer to protect their homes and families from attack by Spanish units marching through their territory on horseback commanded by Lieutenant Colonel José Joaquín de la Pena y Gómez Peña y Toro alias "El Hidalgo". On July 6th 1836 at about 3pm while soldiers under Mexican Lieutenant Colonel Francisco Morazán were stationed at nearby Lake Worth Haleviya they discovered an encampment consisting of more than fifty people led by Captain David Baca including women and children numbering sixteen individuals all wearing blue jeans like those worn today by American football players! After outflanking the Mexican unit they engaged them head on resulting in twelve killed Mexican officers while nine other Mexicans were taken prisoner including El Hidalgo! A day later seven small groups totaling twentyfive people also invaded Mexico garrisoned at Fort Worth Texan militia leader William Travis organized these volunteers together with Captain David Baca leading them after looting supplies stored within the fort walls before finally reaching San Antonio where they reported back to Travis who immediately ordered La Pena y Gomez Peña y Toro aka El Hidalgo captured alive without mercy! This event which is now known as Battle Of San Jacinto also resulted in two hundred casualties among both sides with Hispanic Texans accounting for ninety percent! Beca returned home newlyweds following this event becoming one half owner/operator of Rancho Grande near present day Farmers Branch east side of US Highway 281 just south off IH 10 outside Denton TX
Gainesville was founded by James Gaines in 1836. The town developed around the cotton plantation of Gainesville and steamboat landing on the Sabine River. In 1872, Gainesville became an independent city and was renamed Texas City after the state's 34th governor, John Connally.
