Gainesville is a city located in the Dallas-Fort Worth, TX metropolitan area. The population was 27,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Arlington-Ft Worth Combined Statistical Area. The first people to live in Gainesville were Native American hunters and gatherers who hunted small game on the banks of the Trinity River. In 1836, General Sam Houston sent Colonel James Fayette Worth with a detachment of Texas Rangers to explore what became Gainesville County. By 1840, few settlers had moved into present day Gainesville due to lack of water or land availability. In 1881, George Waggoner bought 640 acres (2 km2) of land north of downtown Gainesville from John Hogg for $5 per acre ($27 per square kilometer). This property would later become known as Waggoner Park and is now home to Baylor University's Graduate School of Business Administration and many other businesses and residences. Waggoner donated this land in memory of his father, Col. James Fayette Worth (1821-1912), who had served as lieutenant colonel in Texas Rangers during the Mexican–American War and fought in various battles across Texas including San Antonio de Bexar against Mexico City's forces under Santa Anna's command before becoming a general at Austin Peay College when it was founded in 1847. In 1886, Jesse Sells organized a group of farmers to purchase 1,000 acres (4 km2) east of town for $10 per acre ($32 per square kilometer). This property would become known as Sells Field because it was used for agriculture until purchased by Houston Oil Refining Company in 1915 for use as an oil wellfield; today parts of this field remain undeveloped . A post office called Gainesville was established in 1901 , and remained open until 1907 . The first store opened near what is now Midtown Square Shopping Center . In 1906 , two men named Alvah Wolfe (1860 - 1936) and Hiram Easley developed a cotton gin on Sells Field which allowed them to produce 50 bales/hour (1 ton/hour = 0.50 kg/day). This sources local historian Jerald Crouch’s description: "With its large cotton gin Building Number One... Alvah Wolfe turned out some 350 lb./hundredweight cloth every day hauled away by six oxen." In 1909, Al pickups truck dealership opened up shop on Main Street just south of Midtown Square Shopping Center after purchasing adjacent land from Harry Denny & sons restaurant chain that year . In 1916 Charles Akins built his family farmhouse at 6200 Westheimer Road about one mile west northwest of town center . From 1916 until his death in 1954 Charles Akins served as Mayor Of Gainesville ." On November 17th 1918 he married Evalyn Kenedy Webb daughter of Grayson Webb Sr., rancher & banker from Palestine who also resided northeast then southwest OF town limits on Big Creek Ranch outside Archer County

Gainesville, Texas is a small town located in Hudspeth County, Texas. The population was 5,814 at the 2000 census. Gainesville has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years. In 1836, the Mexican government granted land to John Hardin in what is now Hudspeth County. Hardin named the area "Gainesville" after his home town of Galesville, Alabama. The first white settlers arrived in Gainesville in 1839 and soon skirmished with the natives over land rights and hunting concessions. A year later, James Bowie moved from Kentucky to start a ranch on what is now east side of town. By 1845, there were 8 families living in Gainesville and some local businesses such as grocery stores and blacksmiths had been established. The railroad came to Gainesville in 1898 and soon began serving local farmers with goods brought up from Houston or other points south. With its proximity to Dallas and Houston, Gainesville grew rapidly during the 19th century becoming an agricultural center with markets for produce distributed throughout the area. Many schools were built here during this time including one called New Beginnings which served as a model for many similar institutions across Texas during the early 20th century Peaceful protests against World War II led to Act No 4 of 1942 which banned Japanese nationals from entering TX without military ID or proper documentation In 1947, gainesville became an unincorporated community when it was annexed by present-day Dallas . In 1951 it annexed UptownDallas within its boundaries (Uptown being then just north of downtown Dallas). This made Gainesville one of only two cities incorporated into Greater Dallas outside of Austin
