In 1854, General Sam Houston renamed it to Gainesville in honor of James A. Gaines, who had been killed in action at Palo Alto during the Mexican-American War. Gainesville was founded on November 7, 1881 by Wm Farragut and his family from Mobile Alabama as a result of the efforts of local businessmen John Pemberton (the father-in-law of J.C. Whitney), Wm Hogg (founder of Hogg's Lumber Company), and Alfred Dickey (founder of Dickey's BBQ). In 1913 when Ellis Island opened up for Immigration to the U.S., many people from Gainesville made their way south to try their luck on Ellis Island before moving on to other parts of America. Many old residents still live here today including Mayor Tom Nichols; Drue Ball; Mrs. Donnie Griggs; Mrs Jane Vaughan; Pastor Billie Piper and many more! The growth in the area around Gainesville began with cattle ranching and farming until after World War II when industry took over due to new technology developments such as petroleum production which led to large numbers jobs being created right hereabouts like those at nearby Arvin Industries or Dow Corning Glass Works etc.. Today there are major companies like IBM, Pfizer or Johnson & Johnson that have major research laboratories located throughout this growing region - everything from medical devices through automotive manufacturing!!! Gainesville, Texas is located in the U.S. state of Texas and is a city on the Gainesville-Bullitt County line. The population was 5,834 at the 2010 census. Gainesville is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first residents of what would become Gainesville were a group of Cherokee Indians who had been driven from their home in eastern Oklahoma by white settlers in 1836. They established themselves along the banks of the Trinity River, which they named "Gainville" after General John Custer's column that had passed through that region during his most famous battle against Seminole Indians two years earlier. In 1840, George Stephenson founded Tennessee Gaslight Company here and began to supply light to towns throughout central Texas. In 1853, Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Union forces near downtown Gainesville while under orders from Confederate President Jefferson Davis to attack Austin; Union troops destroyed most of Ewell's artillery before he could make any move. By 1861, much of central Texas was under Union control and Gainsville became an important strategic center for military operations in east Texas as well as southeast Oklahoma Territory (present-day Oklahoma). On October 1, 1861, Confederate Brigadier General Edmund Kirby Smith selected Gainesville as his headquarters for operations in East Texas; he later led an unsuccessful assault on Fort Sumter in South Carolina). On February 11, 1865, Wilson's army reached Gainesville after defeating Confederate general Joseph Johnston's last major offensive campaign across Central America; it marked the end of hostilities between North and South in that area. One week later on February 17th Garrison surrendered at Beeville with all remaining Confederates within its limits following days-long siege efforts led by Captain Jeter Hogg (the only officer to survive this engagement) and Private First Class James Fenton (whose citation reads "Most gallant performance during entire engagement"). This event ended Reconstruction in Georgia and Alabama – both states would maintain their separate governments untilafter World War II when they came under federal control through the newly created United States government." 2nd Lieutenant Lewis Aiken fought during this engagement leading an effort to repulse Rebel advances northward over several days beginning on February 14th before surrendering himself with his unit at nearby Gonzales Creek just south of town Cemetery where he also lost one leg below knee due to a skirmish injury sustained early that morning.; He remains buried there alongside many other soldiers from 2nd Lt Lewis Aiken’s Company KSA 9 Infantry Regiment who fought at Beeville on February 17th 1865 – some still unidentified today.: Many people visit Beeville today simply because it is close by but no one knows quite how many people actually participated or died in this battle.:gainesvilletexas
The Gainesville, Texas town was founded by pioneers in 1836. The first post office in the town was established in 1837.
