Many locals died during combat or were captured and held POWs for months or years before being released without trial or compensation. When hostilities ended many veterans returned home but few families chose to move back into agricultural areas close to war zones where millions had perished as result of famine, disease and displacement. In 1947 Gail Ives purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) northeast of town along Brazos River for $8 per acre ($/km²). Ives dedicated her land to education with the hope thatgainesville would become one of America's largest inner city high schools although enrollment initially only reached 100 students per year due largely to lackof space within her original purchase boundaries.
