Gainesville, Texas is a small town in Webb County, Texas on the Colorado River. The population was 2,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Gainesville" first appeared on a map in 1848 as part of ranchland owned by John Lewis Gaines and his wife Lucy. In 1880, John Fisk Gaines donated land to the town for school purposes and named it after himself. gainesville had its first post office in 1881. On November 16, 1903, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of Gainesville and killed most of its citizens with only a few exceptions surviving to rebuild. In 1911, Harry Humes became mayor after winning an election against incumbent Wanda Byrd. He served two terms before retiring due to health problems in 1916. A referendum was held in 1918 to select one of three candidates to succeed him but no one won and he continued serve as mayor until his death in 1920. Under Humes' leadership the city began planning for annexation by RoundRock which would have added 3 miles (5 km) to its current size; however this never happened because RoundRock did not want any competition from a small town on their border
