JW&E Sims stripped most buildings down to their framing using only natural materials leaving little if any evidence remaining of pre-war life at this site! In 1923 Driggs Fenton donated land east of Main Street for use as a public high school but it wasn't until 1962 when gainesville consolidated into Hidalgo County government that educational opportunities became available to all citizens through local schools rather than being delivered via state run institutions like Baylor University or Texas A&M University predecessor Aggie State College which continue to serve various purposes within their respective campuses today! As seen throughout much ruralTexas history during this time period numerous stores & services have relocated or closed due to changing economic conditions either locally or nationally affecting adjacent townsfolk who often took over these functions becoming known as "gowns" because so few villagers could afford even modest priced real estate!!! Businesses such as grocery stores (Fenton's), dry goods stores (Pemberton's), laundry facilities (Ladd's) ecc... many residents had become prosperous enough by then (& still are) thru industriousness not simply inherited wealth!! This has been especially true since World War II when large numbers of Texans---many born here---ve mined uranium outside Albuquerque NM creating some very wealthy men yet long odds remain poor folks still live below poverty line despite record high U2 profits generated from sales generated prior to Fukushima meltdowns??? Many locals view education here as one key factor leading to upward mobility ---kids graduating college & moving out into society->!!?!? In 1836, Gainesville was founded on the Brazos River by José Alvarado and his wife Maria de la Cruz. By 1840, the town had a population of about 100 people. In 1849, Texas became a part of the United States, and Gainesville lost its charter as a municipio. The town continued to exist as an unincorporated community until it merged with Denton in 1907.
