In 1868, Smith bought 8 acres of land near present-day University Drive and built a small cabin called "The Bush". He later married Anna Richardson and their children followed suit. The Richardsons became active in local politics and helped establish Gainesville's first school, which opened in 1870. From this point on until World War II, it was home to many important people including Governor Coke Jarrell and Congressman Lamar Alexander. In 1903, Alonzo Barnes purchased 8 acres of land east of University Drive from Smith for $2 per acre. Barnes soon realized how valuable this property would be for hunting purposes as well as developing it into what is now known as Barnes Ranch . His son-in-law Waco Barton also developed some portions of this area into what is now West Campus . With these developments came increased population growth within Gainesville which led to more issues around transportation especially since there were no roads available at that time! One such issue was the need for a way to get people and goods between East Campus/Barnes Ranch and West Campus/West Campus Station . This problem was finally solved when Gus Garcia donated his lot on North College Avenue (now US Hwy 290) which became known as "Gus' Place" because Garcia owned most of the property on both sides! One major development that took place during this time period was residential construction happening along University Drive which eventually led to some nice homes being built like Hermitage , Strawberry Hill , Hickory House , Driftwood Villa , Vineyard Villas & More . It wasn't until after World War II when things really started picking up in Gainesville with businesses starting up like The Lumber Company (later renamed Live Oak ), Texaco (later ExxonMobil ), United States Rubber Products Pvt Ltd (USRPL), Gulf Oil Refining Company (GOEC) & Gulf Freight Logistics Incorporated (GFILI). In 1955, Rolando Vargas donated his lot across from Gus' Place on North College Avenue which became known as Old School Hall because Vargas used to live there before moving out later that year! Today it houses various community organizations such as GHAUDEZ ACADEMY OF THE ARTS & HUMANITIES & ISLAND VISUAL LIBRARY ! On October 26th 1985 Field Marshal Earl Thomas Ulysses S Grant died at Fort Worth Regional Hospital following an illness caused by cancer . A few days later on November 2nd 1985 City Council enacted Resolution #895 providing city funds towards building an Education Museum adjacent toOld School Hall in honor of Grant ! In 1990 downtown Improvement District No 1 approved plans for adding 3 blocks eastward alongUniversity Drive from Old School Hall all the way down University Street leading right past City Hall so that downtown could continue functioning despite Chapel Hills having taken over much of that space !! On April 14th 2006 Mayor Mike Rawlings announced plansfor annexationof portionsof Chapel Hills including Old School Hall so THAT CHAPEL HILL COULD KLUDGE IN !! Gainesville, Texas is a small town located in Collin County, Texas. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. Gainesville was founded by Englishman John Nicholson in 1827 and named after General James Gaines who fought against Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The community experienced some growth throughout the years but has declined in population over time. In 1961, Gainesville became an incorporated city and lost most of its economic significance due to this change. Today, the town functions as a rural bedroom community for nearby Dallas. The first settlers to Gainesville arrived in 1827 following the completion of the Santa Fe Trail. John Nicholson made his home here and began to cultivate land which he later donated to the Republic of Texas. He also purchased a sawmill from Michael Henson which commenced operation in 1828. This mill continued operations until it was destroyed by fire in 1865. In 1861, when Sam Houston became President of Texas, he ordered all government buildings be torn down and rebuilt under new management with state funds. The old government center that had been located on Main Street between Second and Third Streets was among these structures newly constructed with assistance from local businesses such as Nichols Sawmills and Grinding Mill Company along with contributions from individuals such as Jno Loyd Payne and Robert Borden Shultz Sr.. gainesville's post office opened on December 12th, 1861 under this new administration regime dubbed "The Lone Star City". Despite its low population size at that time (1,869 residents as of 2010), Gainesville experienced significant growth through annexation by other municipalities throughoutCollin County beginning around 1915 including Garland (1915), Mesquite (1920), Waco (1925), Temple (1930)and finally Irvington/Aurora Heights annexed in 1935 which created a total area of 43 square miles adjacent to Dallas! With annexations came increased housing developments catering to growing communities within their boundaries not just forgainever citizens but also their surrounding municipalities making this period one marked by expansion into what would become known as "the inner city".

In 1836, Gainesville was founded on the Chisholm Trail by men of Texas. It became a thriving community with its own school system and courthouse. The town quickly attracted settlers from all over the Lone Star state, and in 1845 it became the capital of Texas, when Austin was founded. The city experienced steady growth until the late 1800s, when new technological advances made agriculture more efficient and produced more taxable wealth. In 1907, Gainesville was renamed Austin after General Sam Houston. Today, Austin is one of the largest metropolitan areas in Texas and home to over 2 million people.
