Gainesville is located on the south bank of the Arkansas River, about 5 miles east of downtown Austin and 12 miles west of Midland. In 1850 Dr. John Sayers opened a small school here for students from rural areas near Austin. By 1854 there were five buildings in all in Gainesville Township: one store, one grocery store, three blacksmiths' shops (one old and two new), four ministers' homes (three Episcopal and one Methodist), and six dwellings used for tenants or farm workers by early pioneers who had come to seek fortune along the growth corridor between Austin and San Antonio that paralleled the Arkansas River valley. The townsite formed when a company laid out a road from New Gainesville to San Marcos through present-day Midland on April 26, 1856; this road became U.S.-Mexico Land Road #4a later renamed I-10/US 71 after presaging its eventual completion across Mexico by October 25, 1912 when it linked Brownsville with Ciudad de México via El Paso.– Gainsville Townsite history book pgs 113-114
Gainesville was founded in 1835 by John Claiborne Gaines, a slaveowner and later the governor of Texas. In 1839, Gainesville became the first town in present-day Texas when it was established at the mouth of the Brazos River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1840 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1845, Gainesville become an independent city under the name of Austin. In 1890, Austin merged with Gainesville to form the current city of Austin. The community's rapid growth led to its founding as one of the most important cotton plantations in Texas. After Reconstruction ended in 1865, many African Americans were removed from Gainesville and other cotton plantations for labor on state-owned farms or into leased housing estates called "ghetto" settlements.
