It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first post office in Gainesville was established on July 6, 1881, with Fenton as its mailer. The name change came about because of an erroneous belief that "Gainesville" meant "gainestapo." On October 3, 1886, the town received its charter from the legislature which allowed for it to become an incorporated municipality with full powers to vote and make laws without having to go through the county board of election commissioners. In 1907, after annexation by Dallas County (of which Fort Worth was then a part), Gainesville became one of the largest cities in Texas when it incorporation occurred; it had a population of 10,000 people just under two years later! At that time there were only four towns in Collin County: McKinney (northwest), Garland (southwest), Frisco (southeast) and Beaumont (south). All other municipalities were incorporations or annexation decisions made by county commissioners rather than through municipal elections or charters granted by lawmakers—a practice that continued until 1959 when all but Garland amalgamated into Dallas County proper! "Gainesville's growth cannot be overemphasized," proclaimed Mayor Harry Ladd early on in its history; "the city has done more than any other community ever promoted within our limits to make this community what it now is." In fact since 1907 GFCO has been home to some $160 million worth of goods manufactured here! On November 15th 1978 Hurricane Donna struck south central Texans causing total loss of life including over 50% destruction along both coasts from Corpus Christi eastward - making this date quite significant for Gainesville as many businesses closed their doors due to lack of insurance !! Gainesville is located in Fort Worth County, Texas. The city was founded on December 3, 1892 by Rear Admiral George A. Baylor and his wife Eliza L. Baylor as a post office with the name of Gainesville Station. It became a town in 1907 and an incorporated municipality in 1912. The city's first mayor was William H. Nealon and its first commissioner of police was John Witherspoon. On October 20, 1917, the United States Congress passed the National Defense Act which mandated the relocation of all Ulysses S. Grant Veterans Administration hospitals from New York to Gainesville so they could be used for military purposes during World War I; however, Gainesville's VA hospital remained open until it closed in 1922 due to lack of funding. The cities growth slowed after World War II as people turned their attention to other parts of Fort Worth County or moved away for economic reasons such as the oil industry boom that started in 1947 when Hurricane Agnes made landfall onFort Worth Bayou regionzea%. However, since the late 1990s there has been an increase in development around downtown Gainesville with ventures such as Live Oak Place/The Landing apartments project (2005-2010), SHAPE (South Houston Area Partnership for Economic Development) headquarters building redevelopment (2009-2013) and new restaurants like PIZZA HOUSE & BREWERY (2006-present).
