In 1851, the first gun shop in Gainesville opened and continued to be run by local citizens until it closed in 1934. The town was home to several artillery ranges during World War II, and some of the cannons used by the United States army were brought into Gainesville from Fort Worth, Texas. In 1949, Gainesville became home to the world’s first handgun range when Alamo Gun Club opened its doors. From then on, guns were available for sale at various businesses in the town center including Pawn Shop #1 and Arms & Ammo store. Today, Gainesville is known as a Bullets & Bullets expo and shooting destination for both locals and tourists alike. It is also one of the few remaining towns in Texas that still offers firing demonstrations from their cannon Rifles!

In 1907, the old jail and courthouse were moved to what is now the Civic Center building and are used as public meeting halls today. Gainesville, Texas is a town located in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,816 at the 2000 census. The name Gainesville comes from the French word "gânéville" meaning "valley of grapes." It has been reported that the first settlers in what is now Gainesville were two families who came from New Orleans in 1836. The community was founded on July 7, 1881 when James Waugh and his wife Anna sold land to George Neely for $1,000. On July 10th of that year, a post office called Gainesville was established with Waugh as its first president. In 1902, a mill was built and it became one of the most important industries in town. The mill produced flour and cottonseed oil until it closed in 1990. In 1909, the first school opened in Gainesville and it remained an important part of the community until 1951 when it burned down. In 1955, a new school was built and it remains an important part of the community today. There are also several churches in town which include Baptist (1891), Methodist (1901), Lutheran (1912) and Roman Catholic (1945). Since 1975, there has been a fire department located within town limits which helps contribute to keep Gainesville safe during active wildfires season. Additionally, there is also such an organization as Citizens Against Drunk Driving which works to prevent drunken driving throughout much of Hudspeth County
Gainesville was founded in 1876 by James Gaines and his wife, Cynthia. The city is named after General Sam Houston, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established in Gainesville on October 7, 1876. In 1886, the first schools were built in Gainesville. In 1907, the city attained its present form when it was annexed by Austin.
