In 1876, George Catlin donated his collection of antique glass eyeglasses to the University of Texas at Austin. UT began experimenting with using glass lenses for binocular construction and soon developed what is known as the Catlin Glass Binoculus System which revolutionized how observers use binoculars. This system employed a heavy metal frame with three lens elements that allowed for superior clarity and magnification over traditional wooden or bamboo frames. The popularity of catlinsphere glasses led to other manufacturers beginning to produce similar models including Bausch & Lomb in 1881, Hoya Company in 1932, Nikon Corporation in 1956 and JVC Corporation in 1994

It lies within Denton County on the banks of the Trinity River. Gainesville was founded by English immigrants in 1836 as a small trading post on Hwy 6 near present day Richardson. In 1847, gainesville became the capital of Denton County after its incorporation from neighboring Tarrant County. The town experienced prosperity during its early years as an agricultural center due to its abundant rainfall and access to resources such as cotton, cattle, gold, and timber. However, over time economic development stagnated because of competition fromDallas and Fort Worth for land and jobs in what would become known as the Lone Star State. By 1920, agricultural production had declined while industrial growth began to take hold with businesses such as Allied Chemical Corporation beginning operations in Gainesville proper in 1922. That year also marked the first use of electricity in Gainesville when a wire was laid down from Dallas to Central Plantation for connection to local electric lines. In 1933, after World War II ended and portions of Texas were turned over to the United States government under terms ofthe Treaty Of Bexar (1948), Gainesville became an official US military installation housing both American Forces Command's 5th Infantry Division Garrison Barracks (later renamed Fort Riley) and Headquarters Battery 2nd Artillery Regiment (later redesignated Headquarters Battery 2nd Battalion 7th Infantry Regiment).After V-E Day (6 September 1945), troops left Ft Riley for Japan where they remained until their return home on 15 October 1945 aboard USS Missouri (BB-63). On 4 November 1945gainville was officially reopened by President Harry S Truman with a public dedication ceremony attended by Brigadier General James Gentry USAF who served as Commanderin Chief Ulysses S Grant Army Corps Of Engineers during World War I; Rear Admiral Clyde Wills USAF who commanded Naval Air Station Corpus Christi during World War II; Commodore Burt Loeffler USNR commanding First Marine Group(FMG-14) which landed at Okinawa on 1 April1945; Lieutenant Colonel George Cushing USAF who commandeered USS Missouriand led her into Tokyo Bay 10 May 1945to participate in Operation Overlord.(1) After cessation of hostilitiesgainville reverted back to civilian control becoming known as simply "Gainville" before it again reverted back to military control upon America's withdrawal from Southwest Asia in December 1990.(2) On 9 January 2001 City Council adopted Resolution No:2001-009 establishing permanent morning prayer services at City Hall starting at 7am each weekday through Christmas Eve.(3) On 16 February 2006 Mayor Pro Tem seating ordinance adopted repealing Ordinance No:2004-026 effective 3 March 2006 that limited number of seats available at various council meetings to 25 per session.(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)[9] On 15 October 2007 Mayor Pro Tem seating ordinance adopted repealing Ordinance No:2007-036 effective 30 November 2007 that limited number of seats available at various council meetings to 20 per session.(10)[11] In late 2009/early 2010 Mayor Pro Tem seating ordinance amended changing seat allotment formula effective 1 January 2010 limiting total number allowed per meeting from 493 up tp 499

In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee's army invadedTexas and occupied Gainesville. The town quickly emptied out as residents fled to other parts of the state or to Confederate forces stationed elsewhere in Texas. However, many local businesses and homes still stand today testifying to Gainesville's importance during the later part of the Confederacy. After the war ended, Gainesville returned to its previous prosperous role as a center for cotton production and commerce until about 1920 when oil exploration began nearby and destroyed much of the traditional cotton farming economy. Today, only a few remnant buildings remain from what was once a thriving community near Houston
Gainesville is a city in Brazoria County, Texas, United States. The population was 6,569 at the 2010 census. Gainesville was founded in 1867 as a post office and community. The first school in Gainesville opened in 1868. It closed in 1927 but reopened as a high school in 1935. The first college for women in Texas was founded here in 1916. In 1954, the city of Gainesville merged with the town of Springtown to form the present-day city of Gainesville.
