Gainesville is a city in and the county seat of Schleicher County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex. The first known permanent settlement in Gainesville was made by two brothers, John and James Gaines, on October 15, 1836. They built a cabin on the east side of what is now Elm Street. The town was named after General Sam Houston's home state of Alabama. On November 5, 1837, Hugh McCulloch donated land to form the present day city limits. In 1839 the name of Gainesville was changed to Schleicher County in honor of Friedrich Wilhelm von Schleicher who had been ambassador to Russia during the Mexican-American War and then became governor of Texas in 1840. In 1863 Confederate forces moved into Schleicher County from within Texas as part of their effort to win control over all southern Texas before an impending Union victory over that army would allow slavery to be abolished throughout most of that country. The Battle for Gainesville took place on November 9th when Confederate soldiers attacked Union military outposts near what is now Flower Mound Road and Pennsylvania Avenue just outside downtown Gainesville while supplies were being transported through that town for troops fighting in nearby Austin (the battle is also sometimes called "The Texans' Retreat", since many Texans left Austin before this fight). After losing that engagement Confederate forces retreated northeast towards Fort Hood in central Texas where they surrendered on December 12th 1865. For much of its history until well into the 20th century Gainesville functioned as a small agricultural community with no significant industry or commerce other than farming activities; however starting around World War II it began developing into a major metropolitan center due largely to its location within easy access by Interstate 10 and Highway 35W which led down from Dallas/Fort Worth via I-10 and Uptown Dallas/Fort Worth Station which served as both an industrial center for shipbuilding (known locally as Shipyards Point) and also offered easy access to larger markets such as Houston and Corpus Christi across Interstate 25 which connected them all together along with several smaller towns scattered around rural Schleicher County including Alma (now part of Palestine), Carthage (Now Nacogdoches), Godley (Now Burkhardt), Haskell (Now Midland) and Quinton (Now shale oil companytowns Anadarko Petroleum Companytowns Midland Oil Companytowns Barnett Shale Company). These latter towns became integrated into downtown Gainesville during later decades although those companies still maintain their own independent townships located within municipal boundaries today – Anadarko Township forms northwest corner Of Elm Street & Green Streets; Midland Township forms eastern corner Of Elm Street & Third Street; Barnett Shale Township forms northwest corner Of Elm Street & White Sands Boulevard; shale oil companytowns are Anadarko Petroleum Companytowns Midland Oil Companytowns Barnett Shale Company

There are different types of propellants used to create muzzle velocities beyond 1000 ft/sec (500 m/s), allowing cartridges with increased ranges to be produced while still providing acceptable fire rates at close range
