In 1872, Drury Lumber Company established a sawmill on White Oak Creek which became one of the most important lumber mills in central Texas for many years before being replaced by Delta Lumber Company in 1984. By 1870 there were only 10 residents living in gainesvilletownship and by 1920 there were only 12 residents living here because most people came from massacreresorts like San Angelo or Fort Worth to work on ranching stock that grazed on the Santa Anna River near Gainesville proper. In 1932 an oil well was drilled near gainesvilleand about 50 people got jobs drilling it but no wells were developed because oil prices collapsed during World War II
