Frisco is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 120,514 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Midland County and the largest city east of Dallas. Frisco's nickname "The Open City" comes from its easy access to major metropolitan areas and other destinations via Interstate 10 and U.S. Route 287. Frisco is also home to many large companies including Dow Chemical Company and Johnson & Johnson. Frisco was settled by farmers in 1836 as a small trading post on the site of present-day Frisco City Hall, which had been built as a customs center for cattle drives over the existing Milam Trail between Austin and San Antonio. In 1845, settlers named themselves after James Fenton, an American fur trader who had come to Fort Worth two years earlier with two hundred men and supplies for Colonel Jesse Haines' military campaign against Mexico in what became known as the Mexican–American War (1846–48). In 1850, Fenton donated land for a town at what is now downtown Frisco; this settlement quickly grew into one of Texas' most important cities. By 1870, it had become home to over 20 stores, 24 churches (of which 10 were Baptist), 27 schools (of which 11 were high school), 12 businesses (including four banks), three newspapers (the first published in 1871), several taverns/barber shops and six Presbyterian Churches that served residents of the surrounding rural area or those within walking distance of downtown Frisco proper: Alamo Heights, Springtown, Cedar Hill Village [now Cedar Hill], McCullough Heights [now part of Garland], Live Oak Ranch [now part of Arlington], White Sands Mesa [Now Arlington Heights], Prospect Hill [now Richwood] and Woodlands Ranch[Now Richardson]. In 1907 bankruptcy forced most local businesses out of business but Downtown Frisco continued to grow with new construction such as Waco Road Bridge across US 287 that connected downtown with Milam Boulevard south of town; this bridge helped spur development around Commerce Drive northward which eventually replaced much of Railroad Row east of town as well as new housing developments such as Southside Mills Shopping Center located on what are now Elm Street/US 287 just west of railroad tracks southwest of Town Square shopping center; Live Oak Cemetery was established on property northeast corner High School Rd./Milam Blvd.; these latter developments led to increased traffic congestion on I-10 near downtown due to increasing numbers of people commuting thereto from nearby suburbs as well suburban growth within walking distance caused problems for transportation planners trying to keep up with population growth rates despite improved surface road conditions making it possible for cars rather than buses or trains to serve both functions simultaneously) A severe drought hit Texas during World War II leaving much farmland parched; however Downtown Frisco thrived hosting open air concerts by various patriotic groups like The Stars & Stripes Forever Band through 1939 sponsored by Mayor Joe Crowley whose wife ran Crowley's department store Frontiersmen Unlimited until her death in 1942; then came war shortages leading once again Downtown Frico's growth rate slowed but not stopped when he became Mayor again starting in 1947 until his retirement in 1957 continuing until today when current Mayor Jeff Leach took office effective November 1st 2013
