In 1845 land developers Richard Brawne and James Guthrie started developing what would eventually become downtown Dallas; they named their development "Frisco" after Guthrie's home town near Edinburgh in Scotland (now part of Edinburgh). The City Council approved annexation by Dallas on December 3rd 1898 just two weeks before Christmas present from Richardson Park annexed byDallas along with Oak Cliff from Plano which then became known as Regional Center District No. 7 due to its proximity to DART light rail stations (the railroad tracks forming today's fringes of Downtown Dallas). In 1916 developer Alfred Parke Hite built one of North America’s largest shopping malls called "Hite Mall". The mall anchor companies included Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Inc., Macy’s Incorporated and Brooks Brothers Department Stores Inc.. In 1984 Kmart Corporation closed its doors at Hite Mall after only 36 years in business while Sears Holdings went out of business within 5 years later following bankruptcy filings throughout much of 2000s including Kmart leaving behind over 60 stores across 11 states across 6 different divisions including 4 Sears hypermarkets/mall brands: Sears Canada Post Company (), Sears StitchandBites ()(), Sears Auto Parts ()()(),Sears Home Appliances (). In 2011 Kmart filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection again losing all but 9 locations(in Michigan) followed shortly thereafter by Menard’s Super Markets(). Today there are very few remaining anchors from those early days still standing such as GEICO Insurance Company (), jordan shoes store (), Eddie Bauer Outfitters ().
