Downtown sleeps just over 1,000 people but it sprawls out for almost 4square miles due to annexations from other municipalities that make up Dallas County including Irvington (1907), Richardson ( 1925), Plano (1966), Flower Mound (1993) and Carrollton (2012). Downtown also includes many large businesses such as Pixar Animation Studios Pier which opened in 2006 adjacent to downtown's Hilton hotel complex as well as Toyota Stadium which hosted Super Bowl LI in 2017. One can see tall buildings across most parts of downtown if one looks closely enough especially near I-635 and Elm Street where there are some high rises bordering both streets making it difficult not to see what district or neighborhoods each building belongs too although they have been blended together over time into an indistinct blob type designation commonly seen on maps today despite intentions by planners back when these districts were clearly delineated quite differently

During World War II, Frisco played an important role as a military airfield supplying Allied forces with munitions and aircraft fuel while also serving as a manufacturing base for products such as airplane parts, tanks and artillery rounds. After hostilities ended in 1945, Frisco experienced rapid growth as a suburban housing community until Mayor Clyde Tomblin began planning for downtown development that would create new office buildings, hotels, schools and other public amenities in the late 1960s. In 1970, when Interstate 10 replaced US 75 as Dallas's primary east-west highway, Frisco lost much of its overnight business because residents had to travel away from their homes to connect with workaday life outside of town. However, Tomblin resurrected downtown development plans beginning in the 1980s using proceeds from sales of abandoned shopping malls adjacent to downtown which he converted into mixed-use neighborhoods that include office buildings and residential units.
