Frisco, Texas is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,552 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dallas County and home to the University of Texas at Dallas and Frisco Airport. The name "Frisco" was given to the town by General Obed Smith during his campaign for U.S. Senator from Texas in 1879. At that time the land he purchased included what is now downtown Frisco and all of today's neighborhoods on either side of Interstate 35W - Arlington Heights on the east side and Oak Cliff on the west side. The name stuck because it sounded similar to Fort Worth, which then lay just across the Rio Grande River from Frisco. When General Smith vacated his Senate seat in 1881, he took with him most of his belongings including many guns and ammunition which were stored in what is now McKinney Square near present-day UTD campus. In 1888 John Wesley Powell made an unsuccessful attempt (and failed) to map out a route for Pan American Airways through centralDallas into Mexico City using surveyed land between UTD campus and I-635/Uptown Expressway as its terminus (the first successful passenger flight ever). This original planned route went south along I-35W past Arlington Heights before turning east towards downtown Dallas proper over oak Cliff Boulevard before returning north back up I-635/Uptown Expressway to Blvd.-Avenue K adjacent to UTD Campus where passengers disembarked at Terminal 2 adjacent to Main Gate\Gate 3 used by airlines providing nonstop service within Mexico City until 1958 when Terminal 2 was closed permanently due to air traffic control improvements resulting in concurrent schedules changes making it impossible for planes travelling from both terminals simultaneously). In 1951 Pioneer Airlines began services between Ft Worth/Dallas Int'l Airport and Guadalajara AB Mexico City serving points west of Texarkana & El Paso TX thru terminal #2 adjacent Gateway 3\. Today Frontier Airlines serves this same corridor via terminal #3 adjacent Gateway 4\.
