Friendswood is a town located in Friendswood County, Texas, United States. The population was 4,562 at the 2010 census. It has since shrunken to 3,853 due to the loss of businesses and people moving away. The first settler in Friendswood was Wm. Henson who arrived in 1849. By 1860, there were 10 settlers in Friendswood. In 1865, Johnnie Ladd built the first store on Main Street in Friendswood. The post office moved to its present location on Main Street in 1900. Friendswood became a town after it was annexed by Fort Worth on November 12, 1907. The Post Office remained closed until December 15th of that year when it reopened with mail from Fort Worth and Austin. Friendswood's downtown area went through many changes over the years including being platted out in 1916 as an industrial zone for cotton production by JF Robinson & Son Incorporated (now known as Robinson-Hanson Cotton Company). Many businesses followed such as buildings such as Piggly Wiggly restaurant which opened on Elm Street in 1922 and closed in 1984 and Foster's Drug Store which opened on Main Streetin1927 and closed 1980 before becoming a Thrifty Dollar Store . Other businesses that operated during this time include The Kipper Kastle (now defunct) and Mrs White’s Bakery (closed 1990s). One of the most famous stores located downtown was Budweiser Brewery which opened their doors to the public on July 6th 1959 serving up soft drinks until they went out of business in 2002 before being reopened by Anheuser-Busch InBev as part of their Busch Gardens amusement park project but ultimately failed due to high costs associated with building an amusement park outside Houston.. In recent years much has been lost due to development along I-10 near Friendswood however some remnants can still be found such as wading pools at Posey Park which used Toombs Pool from 1924 through 1971; large brick warehouse complex built between 1939-1941 now home to several small businesses including Atlas Rent A Car; old post office Annex sitting vacant for many years; original main street having been paved over numerous times now only remnant remaining; local history museum open Wednesday thru Sunday 9am - 4pm
