Houston had been chosen as the new city name for Dallas after Mayor James Kellar turned down an offer from then-Governor John Connally to give Friendswood its own city charter. Houston annexed FriendswOOD on April 14, 1951. Friendswood has undergone various changes over time - including becoming an all-girl school in 1959; a bowling alley and casino opening up at nearby Clear Lake City in 1996; and being designated a Hispanic/Latino community center in 2002. Now known as "Houston Heights", it remains home to some of the most racially diverse communities in North Texas.

Friendswood was founded in 1836 by James Fenton and his wife Sally. The town grew rapidly, and by 1851 it had a school, church, post office, two stores and four families. In 1872 Friendswood became the county seat of Collin County. The population peaked at around 25,000 in the 1920s but has since declined to about 10,000.
