Friendswood is bordered by McKinney to the northwest and east, Commerce to the south, and Pharr to the west. The name of Friendswood comes from two early settlers, Isaac Friend and William Friend. The first settler named Friend had several friends who farm near him so he could visit them often. When he died his friends donated land for a public school which they also built. In 1847 Friendswood addition became part of Hidalgo County when it was organized from parts of Webb and Nueces counties. In 1895 Friendswood had a post office with one mail carrier and nine residents; it had no settlement buildings until 1895-96 when a three-story building was erected on FM 620 (now Loop 410) for the town's office and library which still stands today as Friendship Library & Museum. Friendswood experienced some growth during World War II as many servicemen left their homes to fight in Europe or Japan; however, most growth stopped after hostilities ended in 1945 due to lack of postwar housing opportunities for soldiers returning home. There has been much redevelopment over the years including several shopping center projects that have increased employment in the area but not caused any significant new residential development; nevertheless, most residents maintain close ties with their community origins through various activities such as Rotary Club meetings/meetings at Friendship Park or dances at Friendship Gardens which are held every other week during summertime). As one of only 10 communities within 5 miles of McAllen without an airport or seaport either founded or currently operating within that radius (the others being League City, Midland Heights, Edinburg, University Park - all within 5 miles),Friendshipwood functions primarily as an agricultural center serving neighboring townships with small airports providing limited commercial services and no seaports allowing goods entering or leaving this region except via truckloads from Houston each day! In 1902, Friendswood established itself as one of the leading agricultural towns in Texas due to its large acreage of corn and beans; Friendswood's production has continued to grow ever since. In 1923, Friendswood became the seat of government for Bastrop County when that area was divided between Dallas and Fort Worth counties; today it remains one of the most rural areas within Harris County. In 1954, Friendswood voters approved an ordinance allowing for Alcoholic Beverage Control signs along Main Street; this ordinance gave rise to what is now known as "the Friendly Wagon". The Friendly Wagon still operates today as a tourist attraction located near Main Street and Highway 624 in downtown FriendswOOD. One significant event during FriendswOOD's early years was when local boy Bob Hope made his televised debut from FriendshipWOOD before a live audience on July 15th 1951 with then Mayor Hogg presiding over proceedings LIVE on television! affectionately known around these parts as 'The Bob Hope Show'. For more than 50 years since that time friends have confidently contributed their support - literally - through their wallets!
