In 1896, John Neely established himself as a gunsmith in Friendswood and continued to produce high-quality firearms until his death in 1959. The growth of Friendswood was stimulated by its location on U.S Highway 83 just east of Dallas and by its close proximity to local cotton plantations that produced cottonseed oil and other crops until the early 21st century. Today Friendswood continues to be an important agricultural center with a variety of businesses including several banks, churches and retailers that support a vibrant nightlife scene dating back more than 50 years.
