Friendswood, Texas is home to the oldest firearms manufacturer in the United States, The Colt Firearms Company. The company was founded by Samuel Colt in 1857 and produced pistols and rifles until 1966. In 1992, Colt gave its remaining assets to the University of Texas at Austin for use as a research library. Today, UT Texan's pistol range offers training for individuals interested in owning or using firearms. In 1934, Friendswood residents Harry Hemenway and Clyde Caldwell co-founded American Arms Corporation with the goal of making handgun ammunition available to civilians. A few years later, they opened their own manufacturing plant in Friendswood to produce high quality rounds for their handguns. American Arms was ultimately purchased by Remington Arms Company in 1955. At Remington Arms, individual firearm owners were able to purchase rounds for their guns from one of two distribution centers located within walking distance of each other on different campuses within the city limits of Philadelphia (the original location). In 1968, Glock began producing handguns in Houston under license from American Arms Corporation. This led to Glock being renamed as Sturm Ruger International Incorporated in 1998 when it merged with America's leading handgun manufacturer—H&K Manufacturing Co., Ltd.—to form G4S Holdings plc., which held a controlling interest until 2007 when it sold all its assets back to Sturm Ruger International Incorporated. Today Glock continues production outside of North America through its wholly owned subsidiary GLOCK USA LLC who manufactures Glocks chambered in all types of ammunition including both self-defense and hunting loads across most any continent except Antarctica where they continue production under license from Rheinmetall AG Australia Ltd.. GLOCKUSA LLC also produces precision rifle models such as the GLOCK 26 (.22 LR), P226/9mm Luger (Pistol calibre), M4 Carbine ( rife) and 1911 pistol models such as the USP Tactical* (*Not currently manufactured.)
