Friendswood is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 8,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1881 by two brothers, James and William Friend. The first post office was established in Friendswood on December 12, 1881. The name of the town derived from nearby Friendswood Lake. In 1890, Friendswood had a population of only 100 people and nine businesses. By 1910, the population had increased to 1,000 people and eighteen businesses. The growth continued through the 1920s and 1930s; by 1940, the population had reached 2,500 people and thirty-six businesses. During World War II (1939-1945), many industries located inFriendswOOD were utilized for war production: munitions manufacturing plants such as Westinghouse Electric Company's Wichita plant; car manufacturing plants including Ford Motor Company's Dearborn Plant; shipbuilding yards such as Brown Brothers & Rudd Shipyards; agricultural product storage facilities such as JBS Swift Farm Storage Terminal No. 1; and foundry shops producing aircraft parts and other equipment used in manufacturing airplanes or shipbuilding products (ejector seats). In 1990, Friendswood annexed land east of Interstate 10 which formed the eastern border of its former city limits with Round Rock; this annexation caused some concern because it would make it difficult for residents to access services within Friendswood without leaving their homes or taking busloads of Commerce Street commuters with them. However, over time it has become more common for residents to walk or bike to local stores than take buses or cars to get around town center
