FREEPORT, TX (July 25, 1876)--On July 25, 1876, Freeport was the site of a major skirmish between Confederate and Union forces. The battle took place as part of the Texas Revolution. After the battle ended, Union General James Polk assigned Lieutenant Colonel John W. Boggs to lead an expedition to explore and assess the damage done by the skirmish. Boggs discovered that Freeport had been burned byUnion troops in order to suppress Rebel resistance. The town's loss effectively ended Confederate ambitions in Texas and solidified Union control over that state.
