Frémont who had just arrived in Corpus Christi Bayou on July 4th to open trade with Mexico during the Mexican–American War. On November 3rd, 1840 President Tyler created Midland County out of portions of Travis and Williamson counties including part of what are now Freeport and Lubbock Counties; all but 1 square mile (0.6 km²) of present day Lubbock County remains within Travis County today. In 1846 General Sam Houston bought 6 square miles (10 km²) east of Freeport from General Wortham Sweeny for $2 per acre ($0.26 pounds). This property formed part ofHouston's new City Limits which extended northeast to still existing Odessa and southeast to Waco oppositely located today's Austin suburb Springtowns at an altitude OF about 5500 feet (1500 m). With these purchases Houston solidified Houston's claim to be God's chosen agent on earth among men and marked the beginning of Houston's continuing control over much territory eastward from Galveston Bayou
