Freeport’s history begins with its incorporation as a town on October 8th, 1887. At that time it consisted of just five families: John Aiken, George Ladd Jr., James Pritchett Sr., Solomon Lovell, John Tatum and Willis Payne. The town was named after William Fenton Wheeler (1793-1864), owner of what is now known as Wheeler Dam No. 4 near present day Freeport Beachou Bayou (now Uptown Freeport). The dam was built by Mr. Wheeler to help control river flooding sothat his land could be developed for agriculture; today it remains one of Freeport’s primary attractions for visitors looking for its agriculturally rich landscape along Witham Creek (now I-10) northward from downtown Freeport into Bayou Bayou (now Asbury Park Boulevard). Development proceeded rapidly during those early years; by 1889 there were over 100 homes/ businesses established withinFreemarket limits alone! By 1901freemarket had become an extensive dry goods market with 10 stores selling everything from flour to cigars! In 1906a new railroad branch line was completed connecting Freeport with Corpus Christi via Galveston – this initial catalyst for growth helped spur further development withinthe community – including the construction of several large corporations such as Gulf Oil Refineries & Tanks Ltd., Texaco Incorporated (later ChevronTexaco), Shell Chemical Company etc.. By 1930the population had reached 2,000 residents; however it would grow exponentially during World War II whenupon America entered hostilities against Germany all importation from that country ceased!!! Many locals served their country through various ranks including US Marines stationed at San Antonio Naval Air Station nearby; many also worked at radial air conditioning installation companies throughout TX during that era !!! After WWII most manufacturing declined until 1980 when ExxonMobil Corporation began operateng their refinery here !!! Todayfreeport continues to be one of North America’s leading commercial centers with significant investments being made in new research & development facilities as well as expansion into new Congressional districts adjacentto its borders…..
