Freeport is a city in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,601 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Midland County. The town of Freeport was founded by Methodist missionaries in 1879. The first gun sights were erected here in 1881 and remain one of the earliest examples of such devices on American soil. Many historic buildings and businesses have been located within the current boundaries of Freeport since its incorporation as a city in 1907.

Freeport, Texas is a city in the US state of Texas. The population was 9,914 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McAllen County. The industry that has powered Freeport for generations has been shipping and fishing. The area first became known as "Fremont" after John Fremont, an American explorer who explored the west in 1845-47. The name changed to Freeport because it was located on the Red River near its mouth. There were other early settlements here including Poston and Mission Concepción before being abandoned due to lack of water or food shortages during the Mexican–American War (1846-1848). In 1881, a cotton gin was built by J P Haskell and Sons at what is now Spanish Fort Boulevard and Railroad Avenue. This gave Freeport its first major industry however it would be years later before oil would come to town. Eugene Hinkle opened his first grocery store in 1907 on what is now Elm Street just east of Railroad Avenue. By 1912 there were 10 stores in town with total sales reaching $2 million dollars annually according to records from that year cited by historian Donathaniel Lopez in his book "The History of Freeport". In 1916 E Hinkle added a second store which became America'sfirst department store when it opened on Railroad Avenue across from Dutch Bros.. The population continued grow through World War II as products such as rubber, aluminum and plastic came into production here during wartime times thanks to local companies such as United States Rubber Company (USR) and American Aluminum Corporation (AAC). Afterward, however, Freeport lost much of its manufacturing capacity due largely to increased competition from larger cities like Houston and Dallas within TX itself while also facing environmental problems caused by overapplication of wastewater discharge from large industrial plants operating here at the time along with land use changes brought about by suburban development around town resulting in loss of open space essential for traditional farming practices which had sustained this community since Pre-Columbian times according to Lopez’s research. In recent years some heavy investment has been made into downtown redevelopment plans which are slowly starting to take hold but much more remains undone than completed especially given current economic conditions throughout TX overall which have led many small businesses closed or struggling even though jobs have been created elsewhere even if not yet permanent positions available locally typical for most places these days under current market conditions . It was founded in 1887 and has since grown to be an important commercial center for the region. The town is also known for its fascinating history, which can be found buried beneath the surface of its streets and buildings. Here are some brief glimpses into the town's past: Freeport was founded by two brothers, John and James Freeport, who named their new community after their shipyards in Belfast, Ireland. The brothers ran a shipping business from their home until they moved to Freeport in 1887. In 1915, the Freeports Corporation was formed and became one of the largest shipping companies in Texas. The company operated out of several locations throughout Texas before it merged with American Shipbuilding Corporation in 1978 to form American Shipbuilding & Engineering Company (ASEC). ASEC continued to operate as a separate company until it merged with Harris Shipyards Incorporated on October 1, 2000. During World War II, Freeport played an important role as a port of entry for goods coming into and leaving Nazi Germany. In 1951, ASEC built what is now known as "The FREEPORT Tower" - an observation tower located on City Park Boulevard that remains one of the most popular tourist attractions in Freeport today! In 1984, ASEC announced that it would close its doors forever due to financial difficulties. However, within less than two years OFE had reopened under new management - this time led by businessman Don Wohlgemuth Jr.. WHILE THE FREEPORT TOWERS REMAIN IN USE TODAY THEY ARE NOW BEING MAINTAINED BY THE CITY OF FREEPORT AS A TOURIST SITE! The Freeport area was first settled by Americans in the mid-18th century. The town was founded on an island in the Ship Channel of Corpus Christi Bay, about east of present-day Freeport. Early settlers were fishermen and farmers who grew corn, beans, cabbage, tomatoes, flowers and other crops. The town's first store opened in 1792. In 1847, a group of businessmen organized the city of Freeport and began to build a wharf on the bayou that became known as "the Promised Land." By 1860, the population of Freeport had reached 1,500 people. After years of growth and development, however, Freeport's economic fortunes declined during World War I and World War II. In 1961, local businessman J. Wesley Pickering developed a plan to create an artificial island off the coast of Freeport which would be used for shipbuilding purposes. The project proved successful and has since been expanded to include land surrounding the new harbor complex. Today Freeport is one of Texas' most vibrant resort towns with more than 100 businesses located within its boundaries
