On July 1st 1916 Freeport successfully petitioned for annexation by Dallas which resulted in its incorporation into that city as well - becoming one of Dallas' "arlings." The City Beautiful Movement had taken hold in Dallas during World War I and many residents wanted to move away from their noisy neighborhoods to live more quiet lives within freer jurisdictions such as those they had voted into existence. When TXO Energy Resources merged with ConocoPhillips plc., Freeport's oil refinery lay idle until it was purchased by Phillips 66 Corporation in 2006 for $5 billion. The freeport refinery reopened on October 1, 2009 after being closed since 2007 due to high corrosion rates caused by climate change from underground mine water seeping into the plant's systems

By 1907, it had grown to more than 5,000 people and was considered one of the most important cotton ports in Texas. In 1918, Freeport merged with Port Arthur to become the new metropolis of Corpus Christi.
