Freeport, Texas, is a small city located in southeastern Texas on the Gulf of Mexico. The city was founded by entrepreneurs, and became an important port for oil and gas production in the 1920s. The first settlers to the area were men from eastern Tennessee who arrived in 1836. They erected a log cabin near present-day Freeport and named it after their home state of Tennessee. In 1839, some men from Georgia crossed the Red River into Texas following the ill-fated attempt of Major James Kenedy to establish a steamboat landing at what is now Huntsville (later Houston). After entering Freeport on July 1, 1839, they set up camp on an island in the bayou that later would be known as Black Beach. They built two small huts and began fishing for seafood using local oystershells. In 1840, brothers John Slaton and James Waddell arrived with their families from Kentucky. The family built a large plantation called White Sands east of town along Bayou Neches (now I-10). John Slaton also developed nearby Port Arthur into one of the most important ports onHouston's Southeast Side during this time period. In 1847-1848, several investors organized an enterprise called "Texaco" to produce crude oil from shale deposits around Dallas/Fort Worth. The company failed but left behind evidence of its efforts when members drilled down more than 50 feet into shale near modern day Freeport in 1849! With further success came exploration activities by other companies such as Haliburton which discovered additional shale fields between 1912-1920 southeast of Freeport - these fields continue to generate wealth today as part of Marathon Petroleum Corporation Limited Partnership (MPC)
In the early 1800s, Freeport was a small town on the Texas Coast. It was known for its saltworks and whaling operations. In 1836, it became the first town in Texas to be founded by Mexican nationals. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s as cattle ranchers and merchants came to Freeport to buy salt and other supplies needed for their businesses. The town's growth slowed during the 1860s as violence increased along the border between Mexico and America. However, by 1870, Freeport had grown to over 2,000 residents. By 1881, it had become an incorporated city with a population of 10,000 people. The city experienced another boom during World War I due to its naval yards and ammunition production. After the war, Freeport declined until it regained some of its former prominence in the late 1920s through new industries such as shipbuilding and aviation research.
