The first post office in Freeport was established on April 12, 1873. The present-day town was founded on July 4, 1902 by J.P. Hickey and Wm.H. Jennings as a result of the creation of Potter County from parts of Atchison and Topeka counties. Freeport was named for General James Pogue Freeport who had commanded Ulysses S Grant's forces during the American Civil War and later served as Ambassador to Russia The first store in Freeport opened its doors on Main Street in 1902 Freeport experienced rapid growth after World War II when defense contracts were obtained by the government to build airfields and other facilities across America In recent years, Freeport has seen some decline due to loss of jobs within local government and industry related to new production techniques such as 3D printing

Freeport is a city in and the county seat of Freeport County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Freeport was James T. Hogg on November 15, 1876. By 1898, it had swelled to over 10,000 residents and was designated as a town by act of the Texas Legislature. On December 11, 1899, a fire destroyed much of downtown Freeport and many buildings including the courthouse which still stands today. However, despite this setback Freeport remained an unincorporated community until 1906 when it became its own municipality under an act of the Texas Legislature. The first school opened in 1901 in what is now known as Old Main Street Southwest which served students from kindergarten through high school with classes starting in September 1902 and continuing until May 1903; however due to financial difficulties this school closed after only one year. A new school opened on October 1st 1907 called "The White House" which served grades K-12 for 20 years before being replaced by "The Johnnie Walker School" which also serves students today. In 1915 Freeport became an independent city when it annexed portions of neighboring Pecos County; however unlike other communities that have grown since then (Waco TX 1987; Irving TX 2003), no major development took place withinFreeport itself notable either for residential or commercial growth outside the limitscovered by City Limits ordinance until recent years especially with respect to land reclamation activities taking place adjacent to/withinCity Limits boundaries generallyeneeding more detailed planning/review given their impact on environment & community character than has ever been undertaken previously even though estimated cost overruns associated with those same activities are well known* *See attached map depicting changes relative to freeport annexed areas between 1915 & present day
In 1881, a group of businessmen in Freeport establishing the town decided to name their new town after the sea port of Naples, Italy. The association between Naples and Freeport lasted until 1946 when Naples seceded from the United States.
