Freeport, Texas is an unincorporated community in Medina County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,190 at the 2000 census. It lies on the Gulf of Mexico and is located about 26 miles (41 km) south of Corpus Christi. The area that now makes up Freeport was first inhabited by the Caddo people. In 1836, the Republic of Texas purchased land from the Caddo people for $5 per acre. The site that would become Freeport was chosen for its natural resources and its location near a major shipping point on the Mexican Gulf. In 1847, Congressman John Lubbock opened what is now Freeport to white settlement with a grant of 640 acres (248 ha). By 1851, Freeport had five stores and 10 homes. On November 6, 1860, during the American Civil War, Freeport helped support Confederate forces when it closed its doors to Unionists as part of a statewide boycott of war supplies. In 1863, after Reconstruction had ended in America, General James Kountz moved his military camp to nearby San Antonio and began construction on what would eventually become Fort Sam Houston. On July 8th 1865, 5 days after Ulysses S. Grant's surrender at Appomattox Court House in Virginia, Fort Sam Houston became available for occupancy after it had been abandoned by Confederate forces. In 1898-99 Freeport hosted a large world Expo which included exposition buildings and some 3 million visitors from over 190 countries who were attracted by freeports' new technology including electric railways and automobiles

Freeport, Texas is a city located in the U.S. state of Texas. The population was 26,539 at the 2010 census and it is the largest city in Brazoria County. The first permanent settlers in Freeport were James Dickey and his brother John Dickey who arrived from Kentucky on July 4th, 1836. They built a log cabin known as "Dickey's Cabin." In 1847, Nicholas Mews established Mews & Company which developed land around Freeport into what is now Brazoria County. In 1881, Bryan Hays founded Hays Bros.-Lumber Company which became one of the largest lumber companies in Texas with its main plant located in Freeport. In 1915, the City of Freeport was incorporated under the laws of Texas. The incorporation represented an important milestone for Freeport as it signified that residents had decided they wanted their own government and were prepared to participate in local development processes like voting and zoning decisions. During World War II, Freeport played an important role as both a military airfield and port for supplying America with munitions during World War II. After the war, the city experienced rapid growth due to new technology businesses arising from advances made during wartime production methods such as plastics manufacturing and aircraft engine repair/assembly operations which led to heavy industrialization withinFreeport over time becoming home to some of North America's most significant technology firms including Siemens AG (now Intel), Motorola Solutions Inc., AMD (later ATI) among others
Freeport was founded in 1904 as a small community on the Texas-Mexico border. The town grew quickly due to its natural resources, and by 1912 it had a population of 2,500 people. In 1915, Freeport became the terminus of the first commercial line between Brownsville and Laredo. The town prospered until World War II when production shifted to other areas in Mexico. After the war, Freeport slowly regained its former prosperity thanks to industry and tourism. However, recession struck in the late 1990s and 2000s and has left the community struggling since then.
