Freeport, Texas is a small city in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,671 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Antonio–Antonio Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now Freeport was once a salt and lead mining town called New Braunfels. The first post office opened in 1881 in what is now Freeport. In 1892 the company renamed it after its main investor, Augustus H. Freeport Jr., who had given $5,000 to promote the town as an agricultural center for Leadville, Colorado Territory (now Wyoming). In 1896 the town incorporated and began to prosper from its coal mines and lumber businesses; by 1910 it had outgrown New Braunfels for economic reasons and decided to build its own City Hall and other municipal buildings. In 1925 Freeport annexed land extending into present-day Midtown San Antonio; this annexation made Freeport one of two cities within Greater San Antonio metropolitan statistical area (the other being Austin). As a result of its incorporation into San Antonio metropolitan statistical area, Freeport became one of the most economically prosperous cities in Texas during the 1920s and 1930s while still maintaining its rural feel. A severe tornado struck Freeport on April 2nd 1950 which destroyed much of downtown including both City Hall and many of the original building blocks that make up downtown today including Market Street Presbyterian Church which still stands tall as a reminder of how close everything used to be before it all went away in just 80 minutes!
The town of Freeport, Texas was founded in 1836 by the Brothers Schofield and came to be known as one of the most important and commercially successful ports on the Texas coast. The town prospered for over a century until it was destroyed by a fire in 1938.
