Fredericksburg is a small town in Jefferson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,716 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The Fredericksburg Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The first settlers in what is now Fredericksburg were men from Virginia who founded the town in 1851. They named it after General Robert Eaddy, who had won an important victory over Mexican forces at Buena Vista Creek the year before. The new community quickly grew and by 1861 had a population of 564 people. By 1865, when Confederate General Joseph Ewell was brought to trial for treason, most of the original settlers had emigrated or been killed during the war. After being ceded to Texas by Mexico as part of Edmond Taylor's Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, Fredericksburg became part of Texas again under President James Kenedy on February 14, 1849. In 1860, Columbia mercantile company founder and political leader Sam Houston granted permission for two slave traders - Abraham Lincoln and John Brown - to open a store hereabouts with their slaves until their transportation could be arranged by another company elsewhere within twenty days. This early African American business activity helped develop Fredericksburg into an important cotton center during the late 1840s and 1850s. In 1870 Gillespie built a hotel which soon became known as one of Texan hospitality's premier establishments; it remains Operated today by Gillespie’s descendants as a bed and breakfast inn also known as “The Oasis” (formerly registered with Federico Gonzalez). In 1872 he started KenedyCorp Lines steamship service between Brownsville/Houston and Corpus Christi/San Antonio along with steamboats running between these Ports carrying cargo such as lumber and horses while passenger services served local farmers bringing them goods direct from marketplaces around Corpus Christi Bayou near Matagorda Island Landing where they were unloaded on longshoremen's boats manned by black men called "catchers." The steamboats stopped at various points along this route including Cedar Point Light House enroute to San Antonio where passengers disembarked for refreshments ashore then continued their journey down river aboard boatloads of straw bale railroad cars headed back upriver towards Brownsville disembarking at various points along this return trip including Cedar Point Light House enroute home before finally arriving safely at Brownsville just prior to sunset every nightfall! A number of these years Steamboat Mather made trips down that bayou either stopping off at Cedar Point Lighthouse or continuing on upstream past Brazos Pass before arriving safely back at Brownsville approximately every other day! This successful steamer line was eventually purchased by Waco Navigation Company but continued operation until 1906 when all operations were discontinued due to technological advances!!!
