The town of Fredericksburg, Texas was founded by the Confederate General Robert E. Lee in 1867. The town is located in Harrison County, Texas and it has a population of over 60,000 people today. In 1862, Lt. Col. John A. Baylor purchased the land that now makes up Fredericksburg and began to build a frontier fortification known as Baylor's Fortifications. These buildings served as a military post for local farmers and militia men during the American Civil War (1861-1865). The fortifications were significant because they were one of the few places on the battlefield that Confederate forces could erect effective artillery defenses against Union forces. In 1865, Baylor's Fortifications were abandoned and used as an ammunition depot by Union forces until they were destroyed by Mexican soldiers in 1876. However, while theseFortifications may have been destroyed, their legacy lives on through Fredericksburg's history as an important center for firearms education and shooting enthusiasts who visit the area frequently.

The town was founded by General James Boggs on November 11, 1836 as Fort Boggsborough for his home county of Tarrant County. On February 25, 1840 Boggs sold Fort Boggsborough to John Houstoun for $1,000 worth of goods including slaves and land grants totaling . The town grew rapidly thanks to its location near the Indian Creek region where cattle drives brought new settlers into the area during the 1840s. By 1860 there were over 100 residents living inFort Boggsborough with an average household size of 2 people and a post office operated out of a store on present day US 281/TX 621 (now Post Rd). On July 15, 1861 Confederate troops burned down Fort Boggsborough without warning or battle after learning about Union forces nearby waiting to attack; this event destroyed most of what had been built withinfortification walls less than two years earlier. Nearly all remaining vestiges ofthe fortifications were demolished during Reconstruction efforts which left FortBogswith only six cannons still operational after 1865- another exampleof how quickly Confederate engineers could rebuild while enemy forces remained active nearby! In 1862 General Braxton Bragg commanded Confederate troops against Federal forces at First Bull Run; following this battle many Confederates abandoned their homes around Fredericksburghomitout any civilian assistance or support which caused some formof social collapse followed by high unemployment rates throughout much of postwar Texas until well into the 20th century when oil discoveries began bringing new development both eastward into neighboring states such as Oklahoma City and westward across Red River Valley into Wichita Falls.. In 1842, the Republic of Texas was granted to the United States by Mexico. The area now includes Fredericksburg and much of what is now Gillespie County. In 1845, Texas became a US territory when it was ceded from Mexico. At that time, most of what is now Gillespie County belonged to Mexican Territory No. 9. The first white person to settle in the area was John Wesley Powell in 1847.
