In 1893, a fire destroyed most of the downtown businesses including Market Street Presbyterian Church which served as the town's only building until 1915 when a new church was built adjacent to the old one and renamed Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church in honor of its founder John Wesley Fletcher (1824-1912). In 1935, Main Street along with Fourth Street were rerouted southward to make way for an expressway connecting I-35W with Austin and Round Rock. A major event that took place during World War II occurred on November 12th 1944 when over 100% of all civilian housing within 10 miles (16 km) of Fredericksburg burned down due to defective wiring throughout the community caused by munitions production at nearby Dow Chemical Company plant
