The first store opened in 1893; it became a grocery store and then an appliance store before closing its doors again in 1978. In 1915, the town obtained city status from Austin and renamed itself Fredericksburg City Limits after Confederate general John Jealousy Farragut Jr., who had helped lead Texas forces against Union troops during the Civil War but later surrendered at Appomattox Court House. A new courthouse was built on Elm Street between First and Second streets; it remained operational until 1993 when demolition began to make way for Interstate 35E Traffic en route to nearby Round Rock airport . Industry played an important role early on in Fredericksburgh's history; local businessmen started manufacturing tools and hardware among other items beginning around 1907-1908 as American Can Manufacturing Co., Inc.; this company ceased operations following World War I due to competition from imported goods from Germany etc.. Beginning around 1935 or 1936 various printing presses were set up including those owned by United Press International which remain active today as Capital Printers Incorporated (CPI). Protective equipment manufacturer De Cosmo Arms co-founded with two partners - Floyd Doehey (the founder of De Cosmo Automotive) & Harold Pohlman (founder of Hockaday Gadgets) -in 1945 under the name Papermate Products Corp.; this business participated fully with DeCosmo Arms through both ownership & management throughout their duration thru 1985 when CPI merged into Brownells plc.. In 1984-1985 Pat Weisman purchased most assets including all inventory from Brownells plc..
