Fredericksburg, Texas is known for its history as a military and civil center during the American Civil War. The city was founded in 1849 by James K. Polk, then the United States Secretary of War, as the temporary capital of Texas before Austin was chosen as the permanent capital in 1853. In 1861, Confederate forces burned down part of downtown Fredericksburg while they unsuccessfully tried to take it over from Union forces. It wasn’t until 1865 that Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia after his army was surrounded and destroyed. After the war, most of Fredericksburg reverted to civilian control and it became a commercial center with many construction projects taking place throughout the years including a new courthouse and library in 1911-1912. The city experienced another boom period beginning in the 1930s with numerous defense contractor projects undertaken throughout the region which led to an increase in population and economy until World War II whenFredericksburg lost much of its manufacturing base due to requisitioning by Army troops stationed overseas. At this time many people traveled through Fredericksburg enroute to or from their homes in Arlington or Mesquite In 1942during World War II many residents took up arms against Nazi Germany invading America primarily through drive way leading into downtown where they met American forces encamped outside what is now State Capitol Building
