Fredericksburg is a town in Montgomery County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Ft Worth metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Fredericksburg was James Robertson in 1825. The town was named after General Robert E. Lee and his wife Caroline of Virginia who had come to help improve the fortunes of their native county by engaging in agriculture and business ventures there. The name "Fredericksburg" was anglicized to Frederick in 1846 when it became a part of the new Mexican state of Texas following its independence from Mexico. It stayed that way until February 15, 1861, when Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee invaded Texas and took control of much of southern Montgomery County including Fredericksburg as well as other towns and villages within its boundaries (see Battle for Fredericksburg). After the surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, most residents moved to nearby Arlington or Tyler because those areas were still under Confederate control at that time. However a few chose to stay behind to rebuild their homes and businesses which reopened soon afterwards (the last ones being re-opened in 1903). By 1890 there were more than 1,200 residences in Fredericksburg; many had been rebuilding since 1865 due to fires caused by Union shelling during the American Civil War which destroyed entire blocks within city limits numerous times (the worst being 1863's Market Street fire). Many citizens also engaged in farming or light industry until around 1920 when large cotton plantations replaced small farmers as dominant economic forces throughout much of southern Montgomery County. As late as 1958 only 10%of all property owners lived on farms while 90%of all residents employed less than 30 employees on main streets alone; almost one-thirdof all jobs were service-based such as waitressing or janitorial work not requiring training or skill beyond basic cleaning/dusting operations etc.; agricultural production Output per capita peaked about 1940 with approximately 3 acres grown per household but has gradually declined since then due to competition from urban development; today very few people live on farms statewide even though they once formed close majority (%)

Grant's invasion ofTexas in 1870-1871. In 1980, Fredericksburg was designated a National Historic Landmark for its role in history and culture during both the Mexican–American War and Civil War eras.
Frederickstown was founded in 1847 by a group of German farmers. The town rapid growth during the 1850s, and by 1865 it had a population of 2,500. The town's prosperity declined during the 1870s as railroad construction increased competition from other towns in Texas. In 1881, Frederickstown merged with nearby Arlington to form Arlington-Frederickstown Municipal Utility District (AMUD). In 1911, AMUD became an independent city.
