Fredericksburg is a small town in Roberts County, Texas, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2000 census. It was founded in 1879 by Methodist missionaries when they arrived from Missouri. Fredericksburg is named for General James B. Fredericks and his wife Catherine Forester. The town began as a wagon stop on the Santa Fe Trail between Wichita Falls and Dallas. In 1881, the town became an important marketing center due to its location near the Presley cotton fields and its access to the Brazos River. The community rapidly expanded after it was designated as the county seat of Roberts County in 1889.residential development followed soon afterward, with many new homes being erected on land that had been donated by local farmers or purchased from speculators who had invested in the local cotton market. The town's downtown Reeve Courthouse has remained a popular tourist destination since it was built in 1904 with proceeds from a Confederate victory over Union forces during the Mexican-American War. During World War II, Fredericksburg played an important role as a munitions production center for Southern Air Force Unit No. 582nd Bomb Squadron which manufactured strategic bombers for Nazi Germany under Operation Overlord; this squadron operated out of nearby Beaumont Army Air Field until 1945 when it disbanded completely due to lack of military use following World War II In 1951, George Washington Harris Elementary School opened inFredericksburg following passage of legislation creating school districts within Roberts County In 1984, Hurricane Ike hitRoberts Countyand caused extensive damage to both residential and commercial properties throughoutthe area; most notablyto Fredericksburg which sustained heavy damage including several destroyed buildings rebuilding occurred quickly with most businesses reopened within months The city reincorporated as Fredericksburg City Limits in 1990 after becoming one of several jurisdictions within Texas authorized to do so by state law.; following incorporation, much redevelopment took place centered aroundO’Donnell Plaza shopping mall which became home to many locally owned businesses and services
