During World War II, Fredericksburg became one of several Battle Ground communities in Texas that were used to house military personnel assigned to various theaters of battle across Europe. In 1945 its residents helped support the US troop withdrawal from Europe after airlifting munitions to Allied forces on Operation Overlord. After the war ended, many residents returned home while others moved away for various reasons including economic recession during the 1950s and 1960s; however, today Fredericksburg remains a small but vibrant community with a strong cultural legacy that has preserved its name and history
