Fort Worth had been designated as the new capital of Texas following the Battle of San Jacinto which ended Mexican Independence Day onApril 6,1865; however, because Fredericksburg lay within Hudspeth County it remained under Texan control until March 3, 1876 when it reverted to Mexican jurisdiction under a Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ceded all West Texas to Mexico The community began as a cotton plantation settlement with about 100 residents in 1870 Two years later there were 50 homes and 20 acres (8 ha) leased for agricultural use In 1874-75 an oil well was discovered near present day Fredericksburg and water restrictions were placed upon nearby towns due to concerns about potential flooding caused by heavy rains . By 1880-81 only 10 residents remained in the originaltown . A post office was established hereon July 1st 1889 ; one year later (March 8th 1890) it merged with Vinsonville . A school district was organized hereon December 4th 1896 and named for Mrs. Hilda Muhlenberg who donated land for this purpose However since most citizens could not afford uniforms during these early days public schools were conducted out of homes or churches until 1903 when a high school building was constructed In 1902 local businessmen J C Morgan & Company formed what became known as Gulf Coast Petroleum Corporation and drillers started production at an oil field just east of town on FM 727 where today’s Babcock Ranch sits

By 1830 many residents had left for better opportunities in other parts of Texas or California; however, some families continued to live here until they were driven out by Comanches in 1845 during raids that followed Andrew Jackson’s invasion into that region (later called Indian Territory). In addition to providing food for his troops during the fight for Texas independence, General Houston also established several schools and hospitals here including one which still operates today - Spring Hill Hospital - which served those living near Fort Worth then as well as those located further westward along Interstate 10 or eastward through North Austin across Slaughter Creek Valley to Mount Pleasant Cemetery where most people interred are still buried today with few mementos remaining from this period 30 years ago! Eventually industry arrived to take advantage of Austin's new railroad connections; but when railroads reached Fredericksburg there wasn't enough land available for them to build tracks so instead much heavy traffic passed through town on horseback or wagons drawn by oxen until finally cars arrived in 1910 when a bridge was built over Slaughter Creek Valley making transportation much easier overall although freight trade continued upriver until 1920 when highway construction cut off access completely! Although automobiles started arriving more recently they primarily used public roads outside town while shopping centers have since opened inside limits giving visitors plenty opportunity to see everything without going too far outside! Both industrious farmers who cultivated cotton fieldsands military personnel helped turn Fredericksburg into an increasingly important center within Travis County between 1840- 1860 due largely to its strategic location midway between San Antonio & Austin on two major trails leading south towards Mexico City (& north towards Frisco) while also being accessible via Stephens Ferry upstream from town making it easy for goods reaching marketplaces throughout Central Texas (& beyond!) Additionally tobacco products were widely traded here especially among soldiers stationed nearby at various army posts including Camp Bowie & Goliad while also supplying locales such as San Marcos & Nacogdoches
