The Battle of Fredericksburg was fought on November 13, 1864, in the American Civil War. The Union army under General Robert E. Fredericksburg was founded by the French in 1736. It became part of the Mexican Republic in 1821 and then Mexico City in 1824. The United States acquired it from Mexico in 1845. After the American Civil War, it became a U.S. military post and was abandoned in 1865. It was rediscovered in 1984 and has been occupied as a historical site since then. The town is located on the banks of the Sabine River about thirty miles west of Austin, Texas and about seventy-five miles east of Dallas, Texas. It straddles both banks of the river, with its center located on Goodnight Hill (now an eastern suburb), opposite what is now downtown Fredericksburg. The original Spanish mission church, built in 1736 and still standing today, dominates Main Street within the town limits; it is also one of its few remaining landmarks intact from that time period. Fredericksburg grew rapidly during its early years as a frontier settlement due to its location at a crossing point on two important trade routes: the Houston Road (later called the San Antonio Road) linking New Orleans with El Paso and Chihuahua overland travel; and stagescoops running betweenolinear Texan towns such as San Antonio de Bexar County and Nacogdoches County carried travelers through nearby Arlington Heights until their final destination—the Alamo or Presidio—was reached more than three hundred miles away via stagecoach or wagon route instead. In addition to its importance as a transportation hub, Fredericksburg also served as a stop for travelers heading upstream along the Sabine River before continuing their journey downriver to Waco or Abilene . In fact, even after Mexican independence was granted to America cinched off most of this area by General Santa Anna’s forces on February 2, 1846 – just sixteen days after Denton County’s incorporation – many Texans continued traveling downriver for weeks at a time only to return higher upriver near present-day Fredericksburg once Mexican troops had withdrawn from that area following Anglo-American victory at Palo Alto Bridge on October 16th
Federicksburg, Texas was founded in 1836 as the trading post of Fredericksburg. It became a small town after the departure of most of the Red River Valley's settlers during the Mexican-American War. The town was renamed Fredericksburg in 1881 after Confederate General Robert E. Lee, and it retains that name to this day.
