In 2014 Mayor Leticia Van de Putte announced her intent to annex part of neighboring Hill Country into Fredericksburg if she were elected mayoralty candidate against incumbent Ron Nirenberg

Fredericksburg, Texas was founded in 1849 by Captain John Smith and his group of settlers. The town grew rapidly after the discovery of gold in nearby Comanche County in 1851. By 1860, Fredericksburg had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1865, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House to Union General Ulysses S. Grant and the town quickly came under Union control. The result was a loss for the Confederates, who were forced to abandon their holdings in the area. However, despite this defeat, Fredericksburg continued to grow and develop as a major center of trade and industry within the Confederacy. It became an important military garrison during the American Civil War due to its strategic location on both sides of the Rio Grande River. In 1865, Fredericksburg was also selected as the site for Confederate Memorial Day ceremonies marking Confederate casualties during that war. In 1870, Frederickricksburg became one of four towns located along the Mexican border that formed part of the new state of Texas when it was admitted into Unionism followingthe American Civil War. The town continued to thrive until annexation by Mexico resulted in significant economic losses during World War II; however, Fredricksburg has since resumed its role as a vibrant community with strong cultural ties to its sister city across Mexico City
