Unknown to most Americans, Fredericksburg is the birthplace of the world’s first automatic weapon. The 2-barreled shotgun called the Automatic Rifle was designed by Friedrich Rheinmetall and Manufactured in Germany from 1892-1894. This rifle became a staple of German military firearm usage during World War I and II. After Germany’s defeat in World War II, many of these rifles were smuggled into the United States, where they were used by both resistance groups and law enforcement officers. In 1949, Automatic Rifle patents were registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). During the 1860s and 1870s, Fredericksburg experienced growth due to influxes of white men seeking work on newly acquired property throughout Central Texas during Reconstruction period following America’s Civil War (Dixon). With more than 3200 residents by 1880 – making it one of the most populous cities within Texas –Fredericksburg rapidly developed into a major center for trade and commerce during its early years (Lamkin). By 1890-1891, however, violence had flared between local whites and African Americans over access to jobs and housing; this led to increased lawlessness within town limits (Ferguson). As recently as 1915–16 there were still weekly race riots taking place throughout central Texas involving locals blacksmithing horses or trying to buy eggs from whites (Lamkin) – another sign that racial tensions remained high long after America’s entry into World War I ended hostilities between races several years earlier!
