The Johnson family rebuilt it following the war and named it after theirSenator Henry Clay Johnston (1825-93). After he left office, this building became known as "The Johnson Mansion" because four Johnsons had lived there: one during Reconstruction, one during World War II, one during the 1950s through 1960s when it served as the home of then-Governor Don Yarborough (1915-2006) and his wife Jane Austin (1916-2004). Fredericksburg experienced significant growth following World War II with new housing developments being constructed along McCullough Boulevard across from The Johnson Mansion. New businesses opened up including two hospitals, several restaurants and several stores before giving way to more residential development beginning in the late 1990s that included highrise apartments, commercial space and retail shopping malls around McCullough Boulevard itself. In recent years many residents have worked their way up into higher income brackets thanks to advances in technology which has led to increased demand for land close to downtown Fredericksburg as well as faster internet access making downtown an increasingly desirable place for business owners looking for locations close to both employment opportunities as well as easy access to Interstate 45/ FM 830/.
