The post office operated from 1881 to 1907. The town's name comes from General John Custer's battle with the Sioux east of what is now Fredericksburg on July 6, 1876. The town was platted in 1881 by J.C. McClendon and Wm Hays and named for General Custer after his victory over the Sioux at Little Bighorn on July 6, 1876. In 1907 it incorporated into Kleberg County and changed its name to Fredericksburg after Confederate general Robert E Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. In 2015-2016 Fredericksburg passed a resolution reminding all businesses that they must make sure their holiday lights are turned off before November 15th or face violations under state law; this follows similar resolutions passed in other communities across Texas during that time period such as San Antonio and Austin
