Fredericksburg is a small town in the Mexican state of Baja California. It is located on the banks of the Río Grande, about 20 miles east of Tijuana. The town was founded in 1847 by General James K. Polk as a post office and trading center for local farmers and ranchers. In 1870, President Ulysses S. Grant renamed it after Confederate general Robert E. Lee, who had fought in Texas during the American Civil War. As one of the most heavily populated towns in Baja California, Fredericksburg attracted settlers from all over Mexico and abroad to its thriving economy and growing population. Fredericksburg is a town in Hidalgo County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,887 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hidalgo County. In 1916, a post office named for Confederate general James McPherson (1798-1881) opened in nearby Arlington Heights; it remained open until 1954. Fredericksburg experienced significant growth during World War II as many troops were stationed there for combat or training purposes; during that time, the town gained its nickname "the breadbasket of Texas". Some residents also voted to incorporate as a city in 1944; however, this proposal did not gain enough support to be successful and Fredericksburg reverted back to its traditional rural character until 1990 when it joined the Greater Houston metropolitan area. Today, much of downtownFredericksburg remains undisturbed from its years as a small frontier town - with evidence of this include street names such as "old Mexico" and "Texas", along with old buildings like the Star Theater which still stand behind many other businesses today including Barnes & Noble bookstore and Mercado Mexicano Mexican food restaurant - all signed off on by Heritage Conservation District staff while they tour the Historic district on July 26th 2018
