Fredericksburg, Texas was founded in 1849 by John Baptiste Austin and named after his father, General James Fenton Austin. The city’s first post office opened in 1850. It was renamed Fredericksburg in 1865 after Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The town became a ranching center and boomtown during the late 1800s and early 1900s because of its location on the Brazos River between Austin and San Antonio. Fredericksburg also hosted the annual cattle drives that brought tens of thousands of head of livestock to market each year.

The Baylor family continued to live in Fredericksburg until their death in 1932, when their son George W. Baylor III took over ownership of the community and renamed it after his father's old friend, General Sam Houston (1784-1836). Sam Houston had been Governor of Texas from 1836 to 1840 and later became president of the United States (1845-1849). In 1907, during World War I, Fredericksburg became an airfield for American planes engaged in support of America's war effort against Germany and Austria-Hungary. After World War II ended, Fredericksburg reverted back to its original name: George Washington Baylor Community School District #2 school district No./1 school building; however, most public services were discontinued effective December 1st 1970 due to budgetary restrictions placed upon districts by then Governor Ann Richards following her election as state treasurer that year Today much of what once characterized life here has long since left - there are few businesses open late hours or weekends; only one grocery store remaining open seven days per week; no post office or bank; only one streetlight still working; few customers remaining outside all day long... though many people remain close friends with their former classmates from years ago who have moved away or passed away... residents have made up their minds that this community will never again experience those high levels of poverty or violence common elsewhere."
