In 1865, Major General James F. Harding ordered the construction of a new fort at Fort Worth to house Union troops during the American Civil War. The fort was named for George Baylor, an important figure in Texas history and politician. The first target holders were set up in 1868 and continued to be used until 1898. From 1898-1902, Fort Worth hosted the permanent United States Shooting Championships which attracted high-level shooters from around the world.

In 1889, local entrepreneurs funded construction of what is now called Riverwalk Boulevard along Trinity River – one of only a few such developments nationally at that time – which helped revive downtown Fort Worth as an important cultural destination again.In recent years, Fort Worth has seen significant growth both economically and physically due to its status as a global city with strong ties to various industries including energy investment, business services and healthcare consulting among others. This growth has led to increased traffic congestion on some streets near downtown; however, overall development has created more open space than previous decades allowed while preserving historical resources such as old buildings and monuments
