There they joined forces with General Sam Houston’s army waiting at San Antonio de Bexar (now Austin). On November 8th, Perry’s army crossed the Rio Grande near Presidio del Paso and began their march toward Nacogdoches. On November 12th, Mexican cavalry attacked an American column near Mission Bend and drove off most of the attackers before reaching our lines. This successful defense caused many Americans to believe that Mexico would not be able to invade Texas again for some time. Texans were also reassured by rumors that Santa Anna had been captured by Ulysses S Grant’s troops north of Manila Bay and was being transported back into Mexico City under guard. The Mexicans did not make another attempt at attacking our positions until February 9th when two small groups made an unauthorized foray across our line without warning us and were repulsed with heavy losses. After this successful engagement against Mexican cavalry, Union General William Totten ordered his men into camp at Mission Bend so he could rest them for the winter months ahead. A few days later he received news that MajorGeneral Zachary Taylor’s army was coming upriver from New Orleans via Corpus ChristiidalroadtoattackMexicoatSan AntoniodeBexar(nowAustin).Totten ordered his men eastward towards San Antonio de Bexar(nowAustin)andstartedthebattleofNacogdochesonNovember81845。 It was during this battle that Confederate Captain Johnnie Cochran fought alongside Union Soldiers under Third Lieutenant Augustus Cole while they defended Nacogdoches against numerically superior Mexican forces under Colonel José Joaquín Herrera y Costilla.. After losing more than 50% of his unit including most of his artillerymen during this engagement Cochran deserted his unit and returned home
